PROTECTRESS reading, 19 January (+ bonus dog pictures)

Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 19, I’ll be reading from PROTECTRESS at a Zoom event hosted by my publisher, Unsolicited Press! Full details here: unsolicitedpress.com/events.html Join me for gorgons, goddesses, and dogs!

If you’ve already begun reading, you may have encountered Ladon, the dragon brought to the party by the Hesperides. Ladon is a figure from Greek mythology, but I based him on my late, great, wonderful Newfoundland dog Fozzie. Fozzie was enormous, even for a Newfie–he was 6 feet long from nose to tip of tail, and he weighed about 190 lbs–and he was lean. He was gentle and sweet, a big cuddly goof. Here are some photos.

Protectress is almost here!

PROTECTRESS is out on January 11! Protectress places the mythical gorgons in the modern world, where Athena, pumped up by all of the people who blame women for being raped, who slut-shame women who wear and do what they want, and who think that men are always, is trying to drive Medusa to suicide. Medusa, you ask. Isn’t she dead? She and her sisters managed to fool Perseus, but now Medusa’s happy life as a college professor is upended by Athena’s new negative energy, and the gorgons host a party of goddesses, nymphs, and others from myth to try to figure out how to bring Athena around to a more compassionate stance. My book is about rape culture, about the concept of the “heroic,” about solidarity, and about collaboration. It’s also got sea monsters, a dragon, several wars, lots of good dogs, and magic.
