Coming 10 February: Poetry in the Palm of Your Hand

I’m teaching my short poetry workshop, Poetry in the Palm of Your Hand, again via Writespace Houston–but you can be anywhere to take it, because it’s on Zoom!

Poetry doesn’t need to be long to be profound or funny or beautiful. Discover the joys of writing short poems in this one-day workshop. We’ll talk about using limited forms like haiku to help us be more creative, and how to create an entire scene or mood in just one short stanza. We’ll find inspiration in everyday objects, tell stories in short works, and explore rhyme, meter, and free verse. Writers of all levels are welcome.

TIME: Saturday, February 10, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST

PRICE: Early bird price: $45 for members, $60 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Sunday, February 4. After Sunday, February 4: $55 for members, $70 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.

LOCATION: Online via Zoom

Protectress is one of Kirkus’s Top 100 Indie Books of the 2023

I am delighted to share that Protectress has been named one of Kirkus’s Top 100 Indie Books of 2023, and is one of just 7 books of poetry to make the list! Kirkus reviewed Protectress in January, ran an interview with me about it in April, and featured it in a round-up of myth-inspired books in September. Big thanks to Kirkus and to my publisher, Unsolicited Press, who took a chance on a novella in verse about Medusa and her sisters in the modern world, about confronting rape and rape culture, about gaining compassion, and about love and change and more.

A webpage. At the top, it says "Kirkus Reviews" and beneath that, "Best Indie Poetry of 2023." The first book listed is Protectress, showing the cover with the Kirkus star and a line from the review: "A clever, illuminating feminist take on Greek mythology."
